Electrolytes Done Right
Electrolytes are one of the most misunderstood tools in horse care. Some horses get them daily with no plan. Others never get them—even after heavy sweating. The right answer depends on the horse, the climate, and the workload.
What Electrolytes Actually Are
Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate:
hydration and thirst
nerve and muscle function
fluid balance
The key ones lost in sweat are:
sodium
chloride
potassium
magnesium
calcium
When Horses Need Electrolytes
Electrolytes make sense when a horse:
sweats heavily in training or heat
travels long distances
competes in warm conditions
has reduced appetite or water intake after work
When Not to Use Them
Avoid giving electrolytes:
if the horse is dehydrated and won’t drink
if clean water isn’t available
as a “random daily habit” with no sweating or workload
Electrolytes work best when they support drinking, not replace it.
Paste vs Powder
Powder is ideal when the horse will drink flavored water or eats well.
Paste is useful when a horse is too tired, stressed, or distracted to drink enough right away.
A Simple Rule
If your horse sweats, think:
water first
electrolytes second
feed/forage to follow
Electrolytes are not magic. But used correctly, they can make recovery smoother and help horses bounce back faster after exertion.
